Alumni Notes: Rashid Ferrod Davis (GSE '03)

Rashid Ferrod Davis (M.S.Ed. in Administration and Supervision '03) is the founding Principal of Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-Tech), and was recently interviewed by WNYC news reporter Ailsa Chang for an article entitled, "City Principals Say Cultural Rifts Explain Higher Discipline Rate Among Blacks, Latinos.New data released by the federal Department of Education shows black and Hispanic public school students in the city have been disciplined more severely than other students.  Davis offered his thoughts on the findings:
"Black and Latino kids get suspended disproportionately more than their peers because they're often misunderstood by teachers and administrators who did not grow up in the same urban neighborhoods...School staff end up interpreting what is only rough play as menacing or aggressive behavior that merits immediate harsh punishment."
To read the full article click here.

Davis also participated in a U.S. Department of Education webinar entitled "Increasing the Alignment between Secondary and Postsecondary Career and Technical Education" on March 26th.  The webinar, the second in the USDOE's Community College series, addressed the President's recent State of the Union address, particularly its focus on community college and their role in helping American students and employers gain access to the skills they need to compete in today's global marketplace.

Results are then communicated to students, parents, teachers, and administrators via a web-based reporting system.

To learn more about AIMSweb, join GSE and Pearson on Thursday, March 29 in the 12th floor lounge of the Lowenstein Center, Lincoln Center campus. Registration opens at 8:15 a.m.

NY Education Commissioner John King Urges Principals To Be "More Than Managers"

For the sixth consecutive year, GSE assembled administrators representing schools around New York state for its Annual Leadership Conference, held March 13 at the Lincoln Center campus.  Keynote speaker John B. King, Jr., Ph.D., Commissioner of Education for the New York State Department of Education, emphasized the importance of teachers and administrators working in concert to improve student outcomes.

“The good news is that in New York state we’ve seen a steady increase in high school graduation rates,” said King, who taught high school history in Puerto Rico and Boston before moving into administrative roles. “That’s something we should all be proud of and encouraged by. It matters that more of our adults have high school degrees… At the same time, we know we have work to do.”

Human Resiliency Institute in the News

GSE's Human Resiliency Institute Edge4Vets program continues to make strong progress in its effort to help veterans create successful "military to school" transitions.  On February 15th, BusinessWeek profiled Edge4Vets, and explains how the program helps vets turn their strengths from military service into "tools" for civilian life-- beginning with school:
"Fordham University in New York is becoming a magnet for veterans. Less than three years ago, it had 30 on campus. Now there are 300, according to the school.  The growth spawned a pilot program last year specifically designed to help veterans acclimate. Edge4Vets, formed by veterans and Tom Murphy, Director of the Graduate School of Education's Human Resiliency Institute, gives ex-soldiers the confidence and skills to use their service to their advantage."
Tom Murphy and Edge4Vets were also featured in today's Garden City News Online, in a story regarding the partnership between Murphy and Terry Quinlan (now a Garden City lawyer), both of whom attended Brooklyn Prep and were members of the school's 1965 championship cross-country track team there- and now work together to promote Edge4Vets at other schools in the CUNY system, including Medgar Evers College.
