Alumnus Helps Schoolchildren in Kenya

As President of the Ridgewood, New Jersey Rotary Club, Jerry Kallman (GSE MS.Ed., '54) initiated the Club's Kenya School Project in 2008. The Project is an ongoing, year-round activity built around support for the Kishermoruak Primary School (K-School) in the Maasai Mara Reserve of South Kenya, including providing hot lunches for three hundred Pre-K through Grade 8 pupils and executing various educational projects throughout the school year.

In late June each year, Kallman (as project director) makes an annual visit to the school along with his wife, Lorraine. This past year, the visit included an additional eight members of the Kallman family, all of whom volunteered to help the K-School children in myriad ways- from demonstrating proper handwashing techniques and surveying the school's water sources, to indexing the school library and helping to lay out a school garden, to doing various academic and extracurricular art, music and sports activities with students. The visit was documented photographically from start to finish by Lorraine Kallman, who also took individual portraits of each student to commemorate the occasion- for most, the first time they had ever seen a photograph of themselves.

In his role as project director, Jerry Kallman met with the head teacher and faculty to explore new ways of furthering the mission of improved educational opportunities for the school and the students. At the end of the five-day long school visit, each volunteer family member announced an intention to sponsor and eighth grader for high school during the next school year. The four-year secondary school program is open to students who achieve a qualifying mark in national exams given each November to all primary school students. Each of the seven students chosen qualified on the exams (results were announced on December 30th, 2010), and were assured of support for the high school program beginning next month. Currently, the Project's concentration is on raising funds to build a Preschool/Kindergarten classroom to replace the corrugated tin structure currently housing the smallest children as they begin their education.
