Eagle Academy Foundation Professional Development Institute: Graduate Students Wanted!

The Eagle Academy Foundation Professional Development Institute, "Saving Our Sons 2010: Building Community and Defying Expectations" will be held on July 7-10, at Scholastic headquarters in New York City. The Insitute will address the issues educators face in a fight to provide leadership and education to young men of color.

The keynote speech by Dr. Howard Fuller (formerly of Milwaukee Public Schools), will be held on the morning of July 8th, and following the speech, the audience will be divided into groups of 15-25 people to discuss questions raised by it. The Foundation is seeking 15 graduate education students to act as notetakers and facilitators for these groups, for approximately 1.5 hours. Students will be comped attendance at the entire conference (a $400 value) as guests.

In Focus: Dr. John Craven

This month's Inside Fordham featured Dr. John Craven (associate professor of education at GSE) in In Focus: Faculty & Research. Dr. Craven discusses his work with science teachers in Teach For America program, in local schools, and through GSE's Wildlife Conservation Society partnership program (which leads to an MSE in Adolescence Biology/Conservation Life Science).

Spotlight on Alumni: Dr. Kathleen Malu

Dr. Kathleen F. Malu, who earned her Ph.D. at Fordham's Graduate School of Education in Language, Literacy, and Learning, is now a Fulbright scholar teaching in Rwanda at their teacher training college, Kigali Institute of Education and volunteering at St. Ignace Primary School.

Next week she will be holding the nation's second annual International Book Day and Children's Literature Conference, sponsored by the St. Ignace Primary School, the only Jesuit school in Rwanda. Dr. Kelly McNeal, also a Fordham graduate from the Langauge, Literacy, and Learning program, will be joining Malu at the conference as a guest speaker.

Commencement 2010: GSE Student Profile

As part of Inside Fordham's Special Commencement Edition, graduating students from each of the undergraduate and graduate schools at Fordham are profiled in "Faces in the Class of 2010". This year, the Graduate School of Education chose Sister Maureen Flynn, S.J.A.C., who also served as GSE's beadle during the Commencement Ceremony (an honor awarded to a student who represents the best of GSE in academic excellence and accomplishment). Sister Flynn graduated with a Master's of Science in Education (MSE) in Administration and Supervision this spring.

Faculty In the News

Aida Navarez-La Torre, associate professor of education and coordinator of the TESOL and Bilingual Education programs at GSE, published The Power of Learning from Inquiry: Teacher Research as a Professional Development Tool in Multilingual Schools (Information Age Publishing, 2010).

An Op-Ed piece by Tom Murphy, Director of the Human Resiliency Institute at GSE, entitled "What We Owe Our Soldiers When They Come Home: A Memorial Day Tribute" was published in the New York Daily News. Click here to read the article.
